Since I have all the versatile degrees of graphite available (from 9B to 9H), I use several pencils in this tutorial but you can limit the number of pencils to 3 (HB; 2H for lightest areas and 2B for the darkest ones) or even just one if you play with the pressure on your pencil according to the tones you want to get.
Step 1
I draw the outline of the eye using an H pencil.
Step 2
I place the main shadows using an HB pencil and then I blend. I accentuate the eyelid with a 2B pencil and then I blend.
Step 3
Inside the iris, I place a little space which will remain white, then I make little pencil strokes with a well sharpened 3B pencil, I re-draw the upper outline of the eye and then I place a little shadow right below.
Step 4
I color in the iris using a 2H pencil (being careful not to cover the little space created in the previous step) and then I blend.
Step 5
With a 3B pencil, I color in the pupil and I draw again the outline of the iris. Using Blu-Tack (or an eraser), I create lighter areas in the iris.
Step 6
Using a 7H pencil, I color in the lower outline of the eye. Using an HB pencil, I draw the corners of the eye and I adjust the shadows around the eye.
Step 7
I color in the “white” of the eye using a 7H pencil both in the corners and under the eyelid, and then I color in what’s left using a 9H pencil. Using Blu-Tack, I create little white areas to make the white of the eye “shine”. And at the end, I draw the eye lashes using a well-sharpened 3B pencil.
